Saliba and Konsa Give Arteta a Big Defensive Selection Decision
William Saliba’s eventual return from injury could give Mikel Arteta an important defensive selection decision.

Ezri Konsa has made an impressive start to life at Arsenal after joining from Aston Villa. With Saliba unavailable, Konsa has stepped into the defence and quickly shown his composure, physical strength and leadership.

His performances have also reduced the pressure on Arsenal to rush Saliba back before he is fully ready. The French defender is recovering from a back injury and Arsenal are expected to manage his return carefully.
Once Saliba is available again, Arteta will have several options. Konsa could continue at centre-back alongside Gabriel Magalhães, giving Arsenal a strong and experienced defensive partnership. His versatility also means he could be used at right-back when Arteta wants to rotate Ben White or Jurrien Timber.
The return of Saliba would therefore not simply restore Arsenal’s first-choice defence. It would give Arteta more flexibility, stronger competition for places and better protection during a demanding season.
For now, Konsa has done exactly what Arsenal needed. When Saliba returns, the manager may have a difficult decision to make but it will be a welcome one.
